Ashton Turner III was nobody’s Knight In Shining Armor. He’d jumped off that horse a long time ago. And when Lorianne’s grandmother delivers Ash life-altering news, his past explodes into the present.
Ash resisted an urge to stop her. Somehow, he thought she needed to say the words aloud. Whatever they were, he was terrified for her.
She took another deep breath. “He was hitting her. I scrambled trying to reach the door, but I was stuck…in…in a bunch of laundry.” He winced as she gulped back tears, but he still urged her on, silently. “I’d fallen asleep and got tangled up.”
The hysterical choked laugh that burst from her pierced his heart.
“She was yelling at him to please stop. Screaming. She just kept screaming. But then he started asking where I was. She told him I wasn’t there. She said that I’d been taken by Clark when he left. She was lying, but I didn’t know why. I was scared, really scared. I sunk back into the pile of clothes and tried to cover my head to block out her screams.”
Getting trapped in the laundry more than likely had saved her life. Thank God.
Shining tears dampened Lorianne’s face.
Ash wanted to wipe them away, but he resisted. “How old were you?”
“Four, five, or…or six. I don’t remember,” she whispered. “She didn’t let me out until the next afternoon. Late. Her eyes were swollen shut, her lip split, nose broken.” Her shudder racked the bed. He could only imagine what a small child would do about unavailable facilities. The door opening, to reveal the horrors of what she’d heard the night before…
